Girls on Fixed Mtl: An awesome idea, by even more awesome women.
Something great happened this summer in the Montreal fixed gear community. More girls than ever are riding bikes and it’s a wonderful thing. More of us are also getting involved and participating in cycling events. There even was the first official and legal women’s fixed gear criterium in Montreal during the Jackalope Festival. All of this is pretty rad.
Making a place for yourself, as a women, in a mostly men dominated sport can be kinda’ challenging and intimidating. I’m very proud of all my fellow girl riders for what was accomplished this season. A special mention to Paula Manzano and Silvana Cardinal for founding Girls on Fixed MTL, Montreal’s first fixed gear girl group. I’ve always been a big proponent for mixed gender activities, but I think GoF is a necessity as it eases women riders into the fixed gear world and allows them to learn at their own pace while in a safe environment. Safe in the sense of judgement free and welcoming.
The group is still at its beginning, but for sure it will keep on growing. Next summer will be the first complete season for GoF and we (’cause I also am a girl on fixed) have quite a few ideas in mind and things lined up!
If you also are a girl on fixed and would like to be part of it, let me know and I will add you to our secret Facebook group!
